Welcome new Panther Families!

We’re excited to welcome you to our school community. Our goal is to help make your transition into Powell smooth, welcoming, and enjoyable.

To get you started, we’ve created a New Families Guide with FAQs and key information about school life at Powell.

  • Students wear navy or white shirts, navy pants/shorts/skirts, or navy dresses.

    • Drop-off starts at 8:15am, and the day promptly begins at 8:45am. Families can join their students for breakfast, starting at 8:15am and are expected to leave by 8:35 am.

  • Check back for updates.

    • Please download the Remind App. You can select Powell Elementary and your student’s teachers. This is the preferred communication method with your student’s teachers.

    • It’ll also distribute schoolwide communications about activities, events, and other necessary information from Powell’s administration.

    • DCPS-wide communications will come through email and text (depending on communication preferences you’ve set up).

    • I-Ready is used for teaching and testing students in grades K-5. Your teacher will provide a QR code to use with the app.

    • Clever.com provides access to different apps using your student’s id number.

  • Grades and report cards are available through DCPS. Log in to your Aspen Account when prompted. You will get an email when a report card is ready. The school also prints and mails report cards.

  • Each month, Principal Lyons hosts a coffee at the school (and over Teams) to share important school information and updates. These take place on the first Thursday of each month at 9:00 am in the cafeteria. Families are encouraged to attend in person or virtually.

  • Recess is scheduled by grade level and lasts 30 minutes.

  • The school offers a variety of extracurricular activities and clubs, typically held in the afternoons and open to all students as space allows. Some programs, such as DC SCORES, are available only to students enrolled in the afterschool program.

    • There are 2 classrooms per grade for afterschool.

    • Academic power hour begins at 3:30 pm.

    • Students receive free snacks/dinner and recess.

    • 5 unexcused absences will result in removal from the after school program.

  • The Powell Academic, Holiday & Events Calendar can be found under the Calendar tab on our website.

    You may view it online, download a printable PDF, or sync it with your Google Calendar. The calendar will be updated regularly as new information becomes available, so we encourage families to check back periodically for the most current details.

    The calendar is only accessible to the Powell community through a password-protected portal. If you do not yet have access, please write to us to get the information.
